The body of an Austin man was the startling discovery of his neighbors on Sunday afternoon, January 7.

Devin A. Mulley, 37, was reportedly unclothed and lying in the back yard of a residence in the 400 block of West Maple Street. Residents found the body and called 9-1-1 at 2:21 p.m. Mulley lived nearby on English Avenue.

Austin officers arrived and secured the area while Scott County EMS, Coroner Jerry Buchanan and officers with the Indiana State Police (ISP) and Sheriff’s Department conducted a preliminary investigation at the scene.

The on-going investigation has been assigned to an ISP detective. Austin police are assisting in the matter.

At the time of the news release provided by the ISP Sellersburg post, no information was known about the cause of Mulley’s death nor how long he had lain there in the yard in freezing temperatures. Buchanan stated later that there were no obvious signs of any violence or trauma to Mulley’s body.

The coroner said an autopsy would not be conducted, aside from blood tests to determine a possible cause. Those results should be available in four to six weeks.

The Jennings Township Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin.
