'Looking for dog' gets man charged with burglary |

An Austin man who was allegedly looking for his dog now faces a charge of Class C felony burglary in connection with a break-in at a garage on Blunt Avenue in Austin.
Donald E. Garrow, 55, Paulanna Avenue, reportedly told Austin Patrolman Crystal Schapson that he was looking for his dog when he was found inside a garage. The building's door had been forced open, according to Ptl. Schapson's report.
Garrow was apprehended on August 11 after a woman reported that she had seen an unidentified man standing under an awning near the garage. As Ptl. Schapson pulled up to the residence, Garrow reportedly tried to hide inside the garage. He was taken into custody by deputies Rex Herald and Jeremy Arnold.
Garrow allegedly told the officers that he'd been hunting for the dog. Tools had been thrown outside of the structure and an air compressor was missing, Schapson noted. Marks where the door had been pried were also discovered.
Garrow was also charged with theft, a Class D felony, and public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor. In his initial court appearance on August 11, a not guilty plea was entered for him, and a trial date of November 30 was set. His bail was reduced from $75,000 corporate surety/full cash to $25,000 surety/10% cash, and his case was assigned to a public defender.
Garrow was to be back in court on August 24 for another hearing dealing with his bond.

The Scott County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is once again offering Grade 1 container trees and plants for sale. These are supplied by Forrest Keeling Nursery, a family-owned and operated nursery based in Elsberry, Missouri. All trees and shrubs are nursery stock, exhibiting straightness of trunk and uniformity of branching. They are very reasonably priced at $25 each for a 3 gallon best-quality container.
Available trees include Autumn Blaze Maple, Black Oak, Black Walnut, Cinnamon Bark River Birch, Fringetree, Hackberry, Magnolia, Northern Red Oak, Norway Spruce, Pagoda Dogwood, Pecan, Persimmon, Plum, Robin Hill Serviceberry, Royal Frost Birch, Sycamore, White Pine and Willow Oak.
The following shrubs are also for sale: Henry’s Garnet Sweetspire, Lynwood Gold Forsythia, Ninebark, Old-Fashioned Lilac, Shrubby St. John’s Wort and Wisteria.
The District is offering perennial plants of Aromatic Aster, Marsh Milkweed, Obedient Plant, Ox-eye Sunflower, Purple Prairie Clover, Rose Mallow, Stifftick Coreopsis, White Wild Indigo and Wild Bergamot. All perennials are 1 gallon containers and offered for $8.50 each.

124th annual Old Settlers meeting at Neavill’s Grove |

The 124th annual Old Settlers Meeting, which is under the auspices of Neavill’s Grove Inc., is the oldest continuous civic event in Jefferson County to meet in the same location under the same name.
This year’s event is set this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 28-30.
Neavill’s Grove is located about six miles northwest of Madison near Volga on Deputy Pike. It has many shade trees, an auditorium, picnic tables, benches and modern facilities which include a shelter house equipped with a kitchen.
On Friday, August 28, a spaghetti dinner will begin at 5 p.m. followed by a fiddle contest and jam session at 7 p.m. Prizes will be $100 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. For more information or to enter, call 1-812-866-4656 or 1-812-866-2891 or 1-812-265-2240.

Scottsburg man found to be wanted in New York State |

A Scottsburg man was taken into custody for questioning and then arrested by New York State officers on a charge of welfare fraud.
Kevin C. Lewis, 26, appeared in Scott Superior Court on Monday, August 17, on charges of battery and disorderly conduct stemming from a separate matter. He pleaded guilty to the disorderly conduct charge, and the battery charge was dismissed through a plea agreement. Lewis was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 176 of which were suspended on supervised probation. He was also given credit for two days previously served.
That wasn't the end of his legal problems, however. After that matter was handled in the local court, he was transported to the Indiana State Police post at Sellersburg. There, he was questioned by two detectives from New York State. One of the officers was a state policeman while the other was a detective with the Town of Wallkill Police Department.
According to Sgt. Jerry Goodin, Public Information Officer with the ISP Sellersburg post, detectives with the post became aware last week that Lewis was wanted on the welfare fraud charge. They were contacted by NY State officers, who had been searching for Lewis and recently learned that he was in the Scott County area.
Lewis was incarcerated in the Clark County Jail in Jeffersonville while he awaited extradition back to New York State. |
